¿Cómo aprender inglés en Australia? ¿Y cuáles son los requisitos?

Los requisitos que debes cumplir para aprender inglés en Australia son:

• El primero y más importante es tener una visa de estudiante internacional,
• Elegir la ciudad en la que quieres vivir y,
• También pagar al menos seis meses de curso de inglés por adelantado.

¿Cuánto cuesta aprender inglés en Australia?

Todo depende del curso que elijas y la duración del mismo. En Australia podrás encontrar diferentes gamas de instituciones que enseñan inglés o cursos ELICOS cómo se les conoce en ese país.

Por lo general, los estudiantes internacionales elijen cursos de inglés entre 6 y 8 meses, lo cual significa de 24 a 36 semanas de inglés.

En Colegios de Gama alta:

Los cursos de inglés general en un colegio de gama alta suelen estar entre: $260 y $300 dólares australianos a la semana. Los colegios de esta categoría cuentan con instalaciones modernas, estan ubicados en el centro de la ciudad, tienen una gran variedad de cursos de inglés, horarios y clases. Tienen mejores acuerdos con Universidades e instituciones técnicas, para continuar tu formación en Australia, gracias a estos convenios podrás ingresar con un certificado de inglés emitido por este tipo de escuelas, en vez de tomar un examen de inglés internacional. Además, tienen actividades extra-curriculares que incluyen excursiones a museos, zoológicos, playas y otras actividades que te permiten aprender y mejorar tu inglés.

Colegios de Gama media:

Estos colegios tienen una menor variedad de cursos de inglés, y cuestán alrededor de $200 a $250 dólares a la semana. También están cerca al centro de la ciudad y tienen actividades todos los viernes. Suelen tener menos horarios disponibles y los acuerdos con universidades e instituciones son más limitados. Las clases son de alta calidad y podrás encontrar mayor multiculturalidad en este tipo de instituciones.

Colegios de Gama baja:

Son los colegios más económicos que podrás encontrar en Australia. La semana está entre $150 y $190 dólares australianos. Tienen menos niveles de inglés que los otros colegios y algunos están distribuidos por fuera del centro de la ciudad. Sus clases son de alta calidad, pero hay más estudiantes dentro de un mismo nivel y es menos personalizado. También tienen acuerdos con instituciones en las que podrás continuar tu formación en Australia.

¿Qué tan rápido puedo aprender inglés en Australia?

Todo depende de tu nivel inicial y las necesidades que tengas. Una persona con un nivel básico de inglés, suele tomar alrededor de un año para llegar al nivel Intermedio alto, el cual te permite estudiar cursos técnicos.

Las personas que llegan con un nivel entre pre intermedio e intermedio, entre 8 meses a un año, pueden mejorar su inglés y llegar a un nivel Intermedio Alto o Avanzado.

Finalmente aquellos con un muy buen nivel de inglés, toman 6 meses de estudios para mejorar su vocabulario y pronunciación. Las personas que tienen este nivel de inglés, suelen elegir cursos enfocados en otras áreas como negocios, marketing, hospitality o servicio al cliente.

¿Qué tipos de cursos de inglés hay en Australia?

En Australia podrás encontrar diferentes tipos de cursos de inglés. En todos ellos podrás desarrollar tus habilidades y adquirir las competencias necesarias para desenvolverte en este enorme país.

Todos los cursos de inglés, se agrupan en el termino ELICOS y a continuación te vamos a contar más sobre ellos:

Una de las razones principales para elegir estudiar en Australia, es la oportunidad de aprender o mejorar nuestro nivel de inglés, es por esto que estos cursos son diseñados a la medida de tus necesidades.

Esta sigla corresponde en inglés a: English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students, esto quiere decir que son cursos de inglés especializados para estudiantes internacionales. Sin importar la ciudad que elijas, son varias instituciones que ofrecen varios tipos de cursos como General English, Cambridge Preparation, English for Business, entre otros.

Es importante que tengas en cuenta que a nivel internacional hay una clasificación conocida también como bajo el nombre de Marco Común Europeo de Referencia (MCER) en idiomas, que clasifica a los usuarios de un idioma de la siguiente manera:

General English:

Como su nombre lo dice, estos cursos son para aprender inglés general. Los cursos tienen duración entre 2 y 36 semanas, dependiendo de tus necesidades. Puedes encontrar diferentes niveles de General English como:

• Elementary: que es para todos aquellos que todavía no tienen un nivel alto en este idioma y deben repasar sus bases.

• Pre-Intermediate: Pre intermedio, es para los que tienen bases en inglés, pero deben mejorar la gramática y comunicarse de manera más efectiva.

• Intermediate: Con este curso vas a afianzar mejor tus conocimientos en el idioma, vas a poder construir mejores frases y vas a poderte expresar de manera más fluida.

• Upper-Intermedaite: Intermedio avanzado, este nivel es para los que tienen un buen nivel de inglés, pero aún les cuesta un poco comunicarse de manera oral o escrita. Al terminar este nivel van a poder construir mejores ensayos, van a comprender mejor a los habitantes nativos y van a poder hablar con mayor seguridad.  A partir de este nivel, puedes acceder a los cursos vocacionales o VET, que veremos más adelante.

• Advanced: Son los estudiantes avanzados que necesitan mejorar aspectos específicos en pronunciación y gramática. Son cursos muy puntuales y tienen un alto componente conversacional.

English for Academic Purposes (EAP):

Este curso es especializado para aquellos que buscan estudiar en una Universidad o mejorar el nivel de redacción de sus artículos de divulgación científica.

Tanto centros de idiomas como Universidades lo ofrecen, por lo general cuenta con dos niveles y tiene una duración aproximada de 10 semanas por nivel.

A nivel internacional, si tus propósitos son entrar a una Universidad o hacer proceso migratorio, debes tomar uno de los exámenes reconocidos a nivel internacional, tales como el IELTS, Cambridge o PTE. Muchos centros de idiomas ofrecen este tipo de cursos que hacen parte del grupo de ELICOS.

IELTS preparation:

Este es probablemente el examen de inglés con mayor reconocimiento mundial. Los cursos que vas a encontrar relacionados a este examen, están diseñados para que conozcas y respondas de manera eficiente a este test. Al ser una escala internacional, es importante que conozcas que significan sus puntajes.

Cambridge preparation:

El examen de Cambridge es uno de ha ganado mayor reconocimiento en los últimos años en Australia. No solo es ideal para los que quieren presentar este examen, también es perfecto para los que después de estudiar General English quieren perfeccionar el uso del idioma.

El curso de Cambridge suele ser uno de los más completos para aprender inglés en Australia. La mayoría de centros de idiomas lo ofrecen y se centra en inglés práctico. Con este curso vas a aprender inglés de manera efectiva.

Al igual que el General English, el Cambridge tiene diferentes niveles que también tiene su correspondiente al MCER.

Los cursos suelen durar entre 10 y 12 semanas dependiendo de la institución.

Pearson English Language Test o PTE:

El PTE como es comúnmente conocido es uno de los más populares entre estudiantes internacionales. Personas que han tomado los diferentes tests de inglés, dicen que el PTE es uno de los más sencillos de realizar.

No son muchas las instituciones que te preparan para este examen, y por lo general no hacen parte de ELICOS, lo que quiere decir que puedes tomar el curso de preparación, pero no necesariamente va a respaldar tu aplicación a visa de estudiante internacional. Antes de comenzar, debes tener en cuenta que en Australia se deben tener algunos permisos de trabajo que deberás tramitar una vez llegues aquí. Estos son el RSA, RCG, White Card, Police Check, entre otros. Depende del estado y la ciudad que elijas al venir a estudiar y trabajar en Australia.

La mayoría de estos trámites tienen un costo. Por lo tanto, te recomendamos no hacer todos los documentos al tiempo, ya que podrás estar gastando mucho dinero en documentos que no vas a utilizar. Es mejor que apliques a un trabajo y si eres aceptado, tramites el documento. Por lo general no toma más de dos a tres días obtener los permisos necesarios para tu nuevo trabajo. ¿Cómo buscar empleo en Australia?

Lo primero que debes tener en cuenta es tu nivel de inglés. Al ser un país que habla este idioma y al tener población de todas partes del mundo, tus oportunidades laborales dependerán de tu dominio del idioma.

¡Pero no te preocupes si aún tienes un nivel básico en inglés!, hay una gran oportunidad de empleo para aquellos que están aprendiendo inglés desde ceros. Y a medida que vayas aprendiendo el idioma, podrás encontrar nuevas y mejores oportunidades laborales.

Algo fundamental que debes tener antes de buscar empleo en Australia es tu Tax File Number, o número de registro ante la oficina de impuestos de Australia. Tramitar este documento es muy sencillo y totalmente gratis. También necesitaras un fondo de Super Annuation, es decir un fondo de pensiones, la inscripción también es totalmente gratis. ¿Qué debo incluir en mi hoja de vida en Australia?

Debes poner tu nombre completo, número de contacto, correo electrónico y disponibilidad horaria. Puedes hacer un pequeño perfil en el que digas que eres estudiante internacional y las habilidades que consideres necesarias para el trabajo que estas aplicando.

No es necesario colocar una foto. A diferencia de Latinoamérica, en Australia no es común encontrar hojas de vida con fotografía, así que no te preocupes en buscar la mejor pose o la foto más profesional.

Pon tu experiencia previa en relación con el cargo al que vas a aplicar. Y si no tienes mucha experiencia, ¡no importa! Habla con la persona a cargo y cuentale que eres estudiante internacional y que estas buscando aprender nuevas cosas.

En la parte de estudios, dependiendo al cargo y en la industria en la que quieras aplicar, podrás agregar u omitir información.

Si vas a trabajar en el área de servicio al cliente, pero tienes estudios en un área totalmente diferente, no es necesario colocar estos estudios. Para este tipo de trabajos es más relevante incluir tu escuela de inglés y los estudios que estás tomando en el momento.

Antes de ponerte a buscar trabajo, debes tener en cuenta que muchos lugares y cargos implican tener una Cover Letter o una carta de presentación, para aplicar a un trabajo.

¿Qué es la Cover Letter y cómo la hago?

Aquí  (https://www.seek.com.au/career-advice/article/free-cover-letter-template) podrás encontrar un modelo de Cover Letter. Por lo general es una carta muy sencilla en donde deberás hablar un poco de tu perfil laboral y de lo que vas a aportar a tu nuevo lugar de trabajo. Sin importar la industria, ni el cargo, debes redactar una Cover Letter distinta. Recuerda revisar bien el nombre del lugar a donde vas a dejar tu hoja de vida y si puedes preguntar el nombre del administrador, ¡mucho mejor!

¿Dónde busco trabajo en Australia?

Hay varias formas de encontrar trabajo en Australia:

• La primera es a través de referidos; si tienes amigos o conocidos que ya viven en la ciudad a la que vas a ir, ellos podrán guiarte o recomendarte en su lugar de trabajo, lo cuál hará de tu búsqueda un proceso más sencillo.
• También puedes buscar en los diferentes grupos de Facebook de latinos en Australia. En varias ocasiones se publican ofertas laborales a las que podrás aplicar sin importar tu nivel de inglés.
• En el centro de las principales ciudades se encuentran la mayor parte de restaurantes, tiendas de ropa y centros comerciales. Si das un recorrido podrás encontrar carteles solicitando personal en diferentes áreas y los detalles de contacto. Lleva una libreta o tu teléfono cargado para tomar los datos y luego preparar tu hoja de vida.
• De igual manera puedes hacer uso de la tecnología. En plataformas como Indeed, Seek y Joora, podrás encontrar ofertas laborales. Gum Tree (https://www.gumtree.com.au/jobs) es también una de las plataformas preferidas para los Australianos, allí hay ofertas de trabajo en todas las áreas.

¿Qué tipo de trabajos puedo tener en Australia sin inglés?

El inglés es el idioma que te abrirá las puertas en el mercado laboral en Australia. Sin embargo, sabemos que emprendiste este largo viaje para aprenderlo y dominarlo, así que los primeros meses tendrás que buscar un trabajo que no requiera manejar este idioma al 100%.

Los primeros trabajos que tienen los estudiantes internacionales están en limpieza, domicilios, au pair y construcción.

En los trabajos de limpieza hay aplicaciones como Jarvis (https://www.getjarvis.com.au/), que funciona similar a Uber, solo que es para hacer aseo general de casas. En esta plataforma podrás crear tu perfil y contactarte con personas a tu alrededor que necesiten el servicio de limpieza. De igual manera hay trabajos de limpieza de oficinas, centros médicos, colegios, estadios, bodegas, entre otros. Estos trabajos son muy individuales, no tendrás la oportunidad de interactuar con muchas personas, pero te ayudará a sobrevivir los primeros meses mientras aprendes un poco más de inglés.

En domicilios podrás trabajar directamente con un restaurante o a través de plataformas como Menulog, Doordash, Deliveroo y Uber. Para ello deberás crear una cuenta con dichas plataformas y proveer los documentos que ellos requieren, por lo general son identificación, antecedentes policiales en Australia, tu número de impuestos (Tax File Number), entre otros. 

Recuerda que debes tener tu propia bicicleta o motocicleta para poder trabajar con estas plataformas.

Trabajar como Au Pair o cuidando niños. Este trabajo por lo general es ofrecido más a mujeres que a hombres y consiste recoger a los niños de una familia del jardín o colegio, ayudarles a hacer sus tareas, entre otras tareas. Este trabajo es buen pago y dependiendo de la familia, podrás vivir con ellos y ahorrar dinero en renta. Hay plataformas que te ayudan a conseguir trabajos como babysitter, así mismo entre conocidos te pueden recomendar. En muchos casos te piden tener licencia de conducción y un permiso de trabajo con niños, que puedes adquirir una vez llegues a Australia.

Las grandes ciudades de Australia están en constate modernización, por lo tanto, hay una gran cantidad de construcciones alrededor del país. Conseguir trabajo en construcción es una de las mejores oportunidades para estudiantes internacionales. Tienen salarios buenos y pueden organizar los horarios con las clases de inglés. Es una industria que requiere más esfuerzo físico, pero podrás estar en contacto con australianos y personas de otros países, lo cual te permitirá poner en práctica tu inglés.

A medida que vayas mejorando tu nivel de inglés, podrás buscar trabajo en restaurantes, cafés y bares en Australia. Los trabajos en hospitality, hostelería en español, pueden ser de mesero, anfitrión, bartender, barista, asistente del cocinero (kitchen hand) o lavador de platos. Todo depende de tu nivel de inglés y de tu experiencia previa. Ten en cuenta que si alguno de estos establecimientos ofrece bebidas alcohólicas, deberás tramitar tu permiso RSA.

¿Puedo conseguir trabajo profesional en Australia?

¡Sí¡, pero en la mayoría de los casos no sucede de la noche a la mañana. Lo primero que debes tener en cuenta son las limitaciones del tipo de visa que tengas al venir a Australia.

La visa de estudiante te permite trabajar solo 20 horas a la semana, lo que significa medio tiempo. Hay empleadores que buscan que su personal profesional trabaje a tiempo completo, es decir 40 horas a la semana, esto quiere decir que con esta visa puede ser más complicado conseguir este tipo de empleo.

Una skilled visa, o visa de trabajo, permite el trabajo durante 40 horas a la semana. También conocida como sponsor visa o visa patrocinada, los empleadores respaldan la aplicación a la visa de su trabajador. Si quieres saber más de esta visa, visita la página de Inmigración de Australia, donde podrás encontrar información oficial y actualizada.

Otro requisito fundamental para conseguir trabajo profesional en Australia, es tener un muy buen manejo del inglés. Debido a que sin importar la industria en la que te desenvuelvas, es seguro que trabajarás con australianos y personas de diferentes países del mundo.

Finalmente, dependiendo de tu profesión, es posible que debas hacer un skill assesment, o una equivalencia de título. Esto puede implicar que debas estudiar unos años más en Australia o que con los estudios profesionales realizados en tu país son suficientes para validar tu título. Cada profesión tiene una entidad oficial que se encarga de hacer la homologación. Este trámite tiene costos y son determinados por cada entidad.

¿Cuánto es el salario mínimo en Australia?

Desde el 1 de julio de 2022 el salario mínimo en Australia es de $21,38 dólares la hora. Los empleadores no deben pagarte menos de este establecido, pero siempre podrán pagar más.

Fair Work es la Entidad oficial del gobierno australiano, donde podrás encontrar tus derechos, deberes y denunciar cuando te son vulnerados. No dudes en contactarlos si sientes que algo no está bien en tu lugar de trabajo.

El ministro de Salud, Mark Butler, dice que la decisión se tomó por consejo médico. Las personas que vayan entrando a Australia, sin embargo tendrán que seguir cumpliendo con algunas restricciones como por ejemplo el uso de mascarillas en los vuelos.

Esta decisión marca el final de importantes restricciones que Australia mantuvo por dos años desde que comenzó la pandemia. Hasta ahora todas las personas que entraban en el país tenían que declarar su estado de vacunación antes de llegar. Si bien los ciudadanos australianos podían llegar sin vacunarse, la mayoría de los viajeros extranjeros debían solicitar una exención por motivos limitados.

A partir de ayer miércoles 08 de Julio de 2022 por la mañana, esos requisitos se eliminarán por completo y se abrirá la frontera internacional por completo a los viajeros no vacunados.

Esta decisión facilitará la entrada de las personas con visas temporales como los estudiantes extranjeros, turistas y visas working and holiday.

How has the Covid19 pandemic affected businesses in Australia? 

Like most countries across the globe, Australia has been economically affected by the current Covid  19 pandemic. Lack of people moving between states and very few international students arriving on  our shores has meant that businesses listed below are struggling to find workers. 

According to an Australian Bureau of Statistics survey, around 27 per cent of businesses were having  difficulty finding suitable employees last year. One-fifth of companies surveyed said they didn’t  have enough workers. 57 per cent of those have trouble attracting the right people for the job, and  19 per cent cannot retain existing staff. 

Here is a list of professions where employees are in short supply in Australia: 

• Hospitality – chefs, cooks, service 
• Unskilled labour – cleaners, security guards, construction labourers, fast-food attendants,  supermarket workers and couriers. 
• Skilled workers – teachers, nurses, ICT, data managers, physiotherapists, occupational  therapists, doctors, electrical engineers  
• Trades – plumbers, mechanical engineers, electricians, construction managers, painting  trades workers, motor mechanics, carpenters, and joiners. 
• Seasonal – fruit picking and vegetable processing

Skilled or qualified positions

Trades 

A trade position in Australia can be quite a well-paid position. With the current building boom in  some cities, tradespeople are in demand. If you love the environment, you  could find a tree-planting group. Enjoy birds and animals? There are many wildlife organisations to  choose from. Working in your local Op shop can give you valuable retail skills to add to your resume. 

How much can you work in Australia as a student?

Australia’s standard working hours is 38 hours per week (7.6 hours per day), during weekdays,  Monday to Friday. Work beyond that amount can be considered as overtime.  

In the hospitality industry, the hours are very different as most cafes and restaurants in Australia’s  major cities operate from early in the morning to late at night. Hence, the opportunities to work at  convenient hours for you are very likely. 

If you are working as a skilled worker, such as a chef in a restaurant, employers may expect you to  work 12-hour shifts. However, as waitstaff or bar staff, you could be expected to work anywhere  from 5 – 10-hour shifts, depending on the hours your employer offers you.

A simple interface where you can upload your resume and apply for jobs. 

LinkedIn 

A social media platform for work-related content. You may have some success if  you are looking for more skilled positions.

You can also have success approaching a business with an offer of trying out for a shift. Employers  appreciate initiative! 

Do I need a resume to get a job? 

If you use your initiative and approach a business to ask about work, you should create an  Australian-style resume and cover letter. 

A resume should only be one page, and it will list your knowledge and experience most relevant to  the position. Seek has a resume template available for free on its career site. A basic resume will list  your qualifications and the most recent jobs you have held. Most employers will ask you for up to  two referees, and you should include these at the bottom of your document. 

The cover letter should briefly introduce you. If you don’t know the employer’s name, address it “To  whom it may concern” and let them know when you are available to work. 

Once you have your resume and cover letter printed, you are ready to approach employers. Here are  some tips to help you be as successful as possible: 

• Dress well – an employer will not be impressed with rubber thongs and a singlet top • Be polite to any staff you first encounter 
• Ask for the person who handles recruitment 
• Address the person you are speaking to by name 
• Be polite and make eye contact 
• If you cannot speak to the person, you need to leave your resume and follow up with a visit  or a phone call a day later.

If you are applying for a job through one of the online job platforms, you will need to upload or  email your resume. Your cover letter can be more targeted to the job you are applying for. There will  generally be a name and email address to send your application to.

Do I have to pay tax to work in Australia?

Both your Tax file number and Australian Business Number have no application fee. They assist the  Australian Government and Australian Taxation Office in recording how much tax you need to pay. 45% of your payment will be withheld as tax by the Australian Taxation Office without a tax file  number. 

Do I have rights as an employee in Australia? 

It is imperative to know your rights when working in Australia. As a worker, you have rights to  workplace health and safety. minimum pay and leave entitlements. The Fair Work Ombudsman can  provide you with information and advice about your work rights. 

The Fair Work Ombudsman is an independent government agency, they: 

• Can give you accurate information on rates of pay 
• Will check that Australian workplace laws are being adhered to. 
• Offer advice and support on workplace issues. 
• Help in resolving workplace issues. 
• Advise and provide information about working visas for international students. Some things for international students to remember: 
• You must get a payslip within one day of getting paid. 
• Australian law says that the employer must have Workers’ Compensation, which will provide  medical treatment or any other charges if the employee is sick and not able to work. • Some work that you perform as part of your study course does not count in the 40 hours per  fortnight. 
• Voluntary, unpaid work is also not included.  
• Suppose you are ever unsure visit the Department of Immigration. Checking can save you  from any unnecessary stress.  

What else do I need to know about job searching? 

Keep a record of the resumes you deliver and the jobs you apply for online. Be prepared if an  employer calls you back. You may like to keep a written diary or use your smartphone to avoid  missing anything important. 

Don’t be afraid to contact an employer to follow up on an application. Or even to check to see why  you were not their first choice. Sometimes having feedback can help with future applications and  give you ways to improve your chances of getting a good job.
